Our curriculum
Our physical curriculum is designed to build confidence, prepare for a lifetime of physical activity, find joy in movement, and help us embrace discomfort and push past our perceived limits. We believe that hard physical training is an unparalleled tool for developing the human spirit and that the human mind works best when coupled with a strong body.
Why physical?
We build strength and endurance through foundational movements that support a lifetime of physical activity. The focus of our endurance curriculum is running, from short sprints to long distances. We combine strength and endurance exercise in varied combinations to build metabolic conditioning and teach students to push past their perceived physical limits.
Strength and endurance
Our flexibility and mobility curriculum is designed to restore normal functioning of joints and tissue that have been damaged by modern life, prevent injury and promote resilience , release the accumulated tension from hard training and study, and sit longer and more comfortably during meditation.
Flexibility and mobility
We complement the movement-based component of our physical component with practical instruction in human physiology and anatomy so we can better understand how our bodies maintain homeostasis and respond to external stimuli. We explore how exercise, nutrition, and sleep can help us restore optimal functioning, prevent injury and illness, consolidate memories, and improve cognitive function. Most importantly, we learn to deeply appreciate the amazing complexity and resilience of the human body.
Human physiology
Our physical curriculum culminates in the martial arts, which we see as an unparalleled tool for spiritual training. Training in martial arts help our students develop confidence, discipline, self-control, humility, and intensity. It also offers a controlled environment in which our students can touch the primal world of physical confrontation that we share with other animals .
